Nestled at the foot of the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains in the Western Cape, Outeniqua Game Farm spans over 1,300 hectares of pristine natural beauty. Surrounded by open landscapes and indigenous wildlife, it provides the ideal environment for breeding and raising exceptional Weimaraners. Here, our dogs enjoy the freedom to develop naturally, building the confidence, athleticism, and balanced temperament for which the breed is renowned.
The History of the Weimaraner
The Weimaraner is one of the world’s most distinguished sporting breeds, with a heritage dating back to the early 19th century in Germany. Originally developed by the nobility of the Court of Weimar, the breed was carefully refined to create the ultimate hunting companion—combining intelligence, courage, endurance, speed, and an exceptional sense of smell.
The breed takes its name from the city of Weimar, where German aristocrats sought a versatile hunting dog capable of tracking and retrieving large game such as deer, wild boar, bears, and wolves. As Europe’s forests changed and large game populations declined, the Weimaraner’s remarkable versatility allowed it to transition seamlessly into hunting smaller game and upland birds, where it quickly earned a reputation as an outstanding all-purpose gun dog.
Although the breed’s exact ancestry remains uncertain, historians believe that selective breeding involving the English Pointer, Great Dane, and the silver-grey Huehnerhund (“Chicken Dog”) contributed to the Weimaraner’s distinctive appearance and exceptional working ability. These carefully planned breeding programmes produced the breed’s elegant silver-grey coat, athletic physique, remarkable intelligence, and striking amber, blue-grey, or grey eyes.

Often affectionately known as the Silver Ghost or Grey Ghost, the Weimaraner forms exceptionally strong bonds with its family. Their natural instinct is to remain close to their owners, earning many the affectionate nickname “Shadow.”
